FROM 05/24/2018

The thought of speaking on Trinity Sunday horrifies most preachers. There is good reason for this, for the Trinity remains a mystery that must be revealed to us and ultimately appropriated by faith. But this does not mean we should remain silent or make no attempt to describe and understand the Trinity. It does mean we should do so humbly, with the acknowledgement that our rationality is limited, and all our attempts will fall short of fully articulating all God is…

Here are two attempts by noted early Church Fathers:

This well-known formula was articulated by St. Augustine, one of the greatest minds of the Church, in On Christian Doctrine.
1. The Father is God
2. The Son is God
3. The Holy Spirit is God
4. The Father is not the Son
5. The Son is not the Holy Spirit
6. The Holy Spirit is not the Father
7. There is only one God

The second comes from St. Gregory Nanzianus, a heavy weight theologian in his own right.
“No sooner do I conceive of the One than I
am illumined by the splendor of the Three;
no sooner do I distinguish them than I am
carried back to the One. . . When I
contemplate the Three together, I see but
one torch, and cannot divide or measure out
the undivided light.”

I’m happy to report Steve is scheduled to preach this Sunday, and Steve says he welcomes the challenge. Go for it, Steve!

Work Party Thanks
After a delay getting started, we had a great time of fellowship with the Adventists, and a productive work day. The church is looking spiffy! Thanks to all who participated and gave of their time and effort.

On a related note, I’m happy to report the A/C in the Fellowship Hall is fixed! It took too long to get here, and it ended up being not a big deal to fix. The important thing is we now have A/C, before the blazing summer heat arrives!

Balloon Festival Time
If I may put my civic booster hat on for a moment, this coming weekend from Friday-Monday, Fuquay-Varina will again host the Freedom Balloon Festival. This Festival is a boon to our local economy and provides Fuquay with a lot of good exposure.

It is worth our support! Head out to Fleming Park sometime this weekend to check it out. I particularly recommend the night time “Glow” in which all the hot air balloons are lit up in beautiful bright colors.

What it is About
Finally, in the midst of Festivals, cook outs, getaways, and all other activities around the unofficial start of summer, let us remember what Memorial Day is really about. Let us take a moment to honor and remember those who have given their lives in service to this country, and for others.

O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful
hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of
decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant
that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the
benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This
we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

See you Sunday!
