We do not even know their names, or who they were. We do know they were the “others”. Jesus had already sent out the his main team, the 12. Now he is sending out the others, the 70, with the same instructions. Why did Jesus do that?
I suspect it’s because he wanted us to know something important: It’s not just the important, recognized or gifted disciples who are to go spread the good news of the Kingdom, but the ordinary, everyday, unknown disciples as well — people just like us! I will have more to say about Luke 10: 1-11 this Sunday; but for now, I want to help us recognize this passage is intentionally about us. We are the 70! In his wisdom, God has determined the Kingdom will come and be passed to others through people like us.
